The designer behind Monstera

Lars Beller Fjetland’s philosophy as a designer is anchored deeply in his upbringing in Western Norway; a love for the functional forms of Nature characterises the designer’s approach. At the core of his philosophy is a wish to create both a timeless effect and a lasting product.

The designer’s signature is open and straightforward design. His is a sophisticated approach to modern sustainability.

Beller seeks always to cultivate natural materials and their most prominent qualities. The heft of stone, the coarseness of cast iron, and the warmth and softness of cork. His products have become what they are through a process of discovery, by observing the interaction and contrasts that can arise when different qualities and materials are joined.

In 2011 he opened his studio in Bergen, and a year later got his breakthrough with the launch of four products at the annual Salone Del Mobile exhibition in Milan. During the years 2012–2018 Lars Beller Fjetland’s work has been awarded both Norwegian and international prizes.

‘To work with materials in their purest form—and to see the materials become useful and beautiful expressions by virtue of their most basic qualities—has as long as I can remember been my motivation as a designer.’
